We got into the city late at night and came out of the subway into the middle of a street dance. Intrigued by all the elderly people dancing we stuck around - it wasn't long until I was dancing with an old Chinese man on the sidewalk :) We stayed in a great hostel near to an awesome bakery and a subway stop, which made for each access to downtown.
It took us a little bit of walking around, but eventually we found the shopping streets. It doesn't take long for the shop sales guys to spot you and try to convince you to follow them into a series of hidden knock-off shops. We went into shops behind trick walls, doors and bookcases. We even went to a shop hidden in a hotel. This is a picture of a typical street in Shanghai with hidden shops.
Many of the nicer shopping streets in Shanghai are very modern with tons of signs and lights.
Here is an example of why it's risky to order anything with meat . . . this is supposed to be chicken . . .
On a recommendation, we had drinks at M on the Bund. There is an incredible view from the bar across the Bund (the river running through Shanghai). This was my favorite skyline we saw all trip.
Shanghai at night was all lit up and looked like a quintessential metropolitan Asian city. It was a sight to be seen.
Only one more stop on this crazy journey - hard to believe!
