The Republic of Berkeley

Berkeley, oh Berkeley . . . on Thursday we experienced our first protest/demonstration. For those who are not very familiar with Berkeley I'll give you a quick snapshot.

Berkeley is a quirky hippie town 20 minutes east of San Francisco. To generalize, most people residing here are extremely liberal, passionate and vocal - thus the demonstrations. Some of you may remember the tree dwellers who literally lived in the trees on campus in an effort to prevent them from being cut down. In other words, its a bizarre but totally entertaining place to live.

Thursday's demonstration was in response to University spending and tuition hikes . . . it was MASSIVE. All of the local news stations were there, the library closed down because too few workers came that day and tons of classes were canceled.

We're pretty sure this will only be the first of many major protests we'll see here ;)
